Jason Gore - PGA Golfer
(Sat, Nov 21 - 7:25pm ET)
Jason Gore shot 10-under-par 278 to finish T-9 in the second stage of Q School at Oak Valley GC in Beaumont, California, the final of six second-stage qualifiers. Three strokes inside the cut, Gore was one of 23 to advance to the final stage at Bear Lakes CC in two weeks. Should he eventually secure his 2010 PGA Tour card, he will have better status than from where he competed in 2009 (conditional). Among those against whom he will be fighting for that promotion are co-medalists Jeff Brehaut and Brendan Steele (18-under 270), Phil Tataurangi (T-4), Todd Fischer (T-4), Jonathan Kaye (T-9), Mark Hensby (T-9), Aaron Watkins (T-9), Jin Park (T-9), Cameron Tringale (T-17) and David McKenzie (T-19). Notables that failed to advance include Bob May (T-24), Jerry Smith (T-27), Azuma Yano (T-29), James Oh (T-35), Steve Allan (T-35), Craig Barlow (T-35), Doug LaBelle II (T-35), Craig Kanada (T-42), Kirk Triplett (T-47), Stephen Leaney (T-47), Dennis Paulson (T-47), 19-year-old Richard Lee (T-56) and Bob Burns (T-68).
Sam Cyr - PGA Golfer
(Sat, Nov 21 - 7:09pm ET)
Sam Cyr shot 12-over-par 296, finishing T-76 in the second stage of Q School at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas. The professional career of one of the best ever at the NAIA level will begin quietly after Cyr missed the cut by 16 strokes. Twenty-three from this site will book tee times at Bear Lakes CC in two weeks, including medalist Martin Flores (15-under 269). Troy Kelly (12-under) was runner-up. Other notables that also succeeded include Kyle Reifers (3rd), Tommy Gainey (T-4), Paul Stankowski (6th), Colt Knost (T-7), Scott Gutschewski (T-7), Luke List (T-7), Brenden Pappas (T-12), David Lutterus (T-12), Tyler Aldridge (T-16), Kelly Grunewald (T-19) and Michael Connell (T-19). Among those falling short were Steven Bowditch (T-24), Tag Ridings (T-28), Brian Vranesh (T-28), Kyle Stanley (T-28), Nick Flanagan (T-33), Kris Cox (T-33), Peter Tomasulo (T-45), Matt Hendrix (T-45), Kent Jones (T-62), and Wil Collins (T-78). David Berganio, Jr. placed T-65, failing to secure a safety net should he fall short of the terms of his expected medical extension out of the Q School/Nationwide Tour category.
Brandt Jobe - PGA Golfer
(Sat, Nov 21 - 6:26pm ET)
Brandt Jobe finished 4-under-par 284, finishing T-17 to make the cut on the number in the second stage of Q School at Deerwood GC in Kingwood, Texas. Jobe overcame middle rounds of 74 and 75 to advance with 22 others. After losing his PGA Tour status for failing to meet the terms of his medical extension at the Honda Classic, he spent most of the year in a familiar spot - Japan - site of six of his professional victories. Emmett Turner of Augusta, Georgia medaled at this qualifier with a 15-under 273. Neal Lancaster (13-under) was the runner-up. Omar Uresti finished 3rd with his former caddie, Michael Collins (now Kevin Streelman's looper), on the bag. J.P. Hayes finished T-10 to advance, one year after disqualifying himself from the second stage at Deerwood. Other notables advancing include David Mathis (4th) and Glen Day (9th). Jamie Lovemark (T-32) was arguably the most notable that failed to advance. Among those also on the outside looking in are Michael Putham (T-23), Jim Carter (T-28), Brian Bateman (T-37), B.J. Staten (T-55), Clay Ogden (T-57), Kevin Chappell (66th), Jason Allred (69th) and Brian Watts (WD). Source: PGA Tour Q School
Mike Van Sickle - PGA Golfer
(Sat, Nov 21 - 5:26pm ET)
Mike Van Sickle finished T-65 after a 1-over-par 289 in the second stage of Q School at the Mountain View GC at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Georgia. Twenty-three golfers at 8-under or lower advanced to the final stage at Bear Lakes CC in two weeks. Van Sickle was the medalist at his pre-qualifier and recorded the lowest final round at his first stage site, but a 73-73-70-73 effort this week will delay his full-time rise to golf's highest professional levels for at least one year. Kevin Kisner won this qualifier with a blistering 25-under 263 for a seven-stroke margin. Kisner had just two bogeys all week; he also had an eagle and 25 birdies. Notables advancing with Kisner are Ken Duke (3rd), Matt Davidson (T-4), Carlos Franco (T-7), Chris Kirk (T-7), Tom Scherrer (T-10), John Riegger (T-16), Robert Damron (T-20) and Kyle Thompson (T-20). Among the more recognizable falling short with Van Sickle were Len Mattiace (T-24), Brendon Todd (T-30), Joel Edwards (T-30), Jim McGovern (T-38), Derek Fathauer (T-42), Travis Perkins (T-42), Drew Weaver (T-49), Ian Leggatt (T-54), Michael Clark II (T-61), Danny Briggs (T-61), Brent Schwarzrock (T- Source: PGA Tour Q School
Shaun Micheel - PGA Golfer
(Sat, Nov 21 - 5:26pm ET)
| Shaun Micheel shot 5-under-par 279 to finish T-9 in the second stage of Q School at the Bad and Ugly Courses of Hombre GC in Panama City Beach, Florida. Because he has the approval of the PGA Tour for the medication he takes for a low testosterone level, Micheel has received increased attention due to Doug Barron's similar diagnosis. Unlike Barron, Micheel he will have status somewhere next year despite today's 73, highest among the 20 that will play Bear Lakes CC in two weeks. Notables joining him will be medalist Garrett Osborn (20-under), Casey Wittenberg (2nd, 16-under), D.J. Brigman (T-6), Dicky Pride (T-9), Skip Kendall (T-12), Kris Blanks (T-12) and Rick Price (T-12). Among those that failed to advance include Jarrod Lyle (T-21), who shot a 74 today to miss the cut on the number, Guy Boros (T-21), Ryan Armour (T-26), Scott Sterling (T-29), Jaxon Brigman (T-36), Paul Claxton (T-39), Sonny Skinner (T-64), Mark Carnevale (75th), Peter Lonard (WD) and Nolan Henke (WD). | Jay Williamson - PGA Golfer |
(Sat, Nov 21 - 4:36pm ET)
| Jay Williamson shot 18-under-par 270 to win the second stage of Q School at Southern Hills Plantation Club in Brooksville, Florida. There is no consolation prize for failing to survive the second stage. For all non-winners of PGA Tour-sanctioned events that don't advance to the final stage, 2010 will be a year full of seeking sponsor exemptions everywhere, but primarily time spent on the mini-tours. Notables joining Williamson at Bear Lakes CC in two weeks include Arjun Atwal (T-9), Marco Dawson (T-14), Billy Horschel (T-14), Jon Mills (T-14) and Matthew Borchert (T-18). Finishing well outside the top-21 to advance was Erik Compton, who placed T-62. Others that fell short include Joe Durant (T-22), Bob Heintz (T-26), Danny Ellis (T-28), Brad Adamonis (T-35), Billy Hurley III (T-42), Dean Wilson (T-47), Deane Pappas (T-47), Ty Tryon (T-51), Eric Axley (T-51), David Branshaw (T-51), Jim Gallagher, Jr. (T-56), Frank Lickliter II (T-56), Leif Olson (T-56), Robert Gamez (T-65), Grant Waite (T-65), Ted Tryba (71st), David Gossett (72nd) and Mike Heinen (WD). | Lee Westwood - PGA Golfer |
(Sat, Nov 21 - 12:43pm ET)
Lee Westwood is 15-under-par 66-69-66=201 through three rounds of the Dubai World Championship, maintaining a two-stroke lead over Ross McGowan (71-66-66=203). Westwood was bogey-free today and has given back just two strokes all week. Moreover, he and McGowan were two of the three that carded the field-low 66s in the third round. A stable of three golfers, including Rory McIlroy and Padraig Harrington, are five strokes off Westwood's pace. Also at stake on Sunday are exemptions into the U.S. and British Opens, awarded to the top-15 and top-30, respectively, in the final Race to Dubai standings.
Robert Allenby - PGA Golfer
(Thu, Nov 19 - 10:14am ET)
Robert Allenby shot a 7-under-par 65 in the opening round of the Dubai World Championship, good for a one-stroke lead over Lee Westwood, Camilo Villegas and Chris Wood. Allenby buried eight birdies at the Greg Norman-designed Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates in the United Arab Emirates. Thirty-three of the 58 entrants are under par through 18 holes. Notables not among that lot are Justin Rose (E), Miguel Angel Jimenez (E), Ross Fisher (+1), Luke Donald (+1), Ernie Els (+2) and Graeme McDowell (+4). Paul Casey (rib muscle) and Anthony Kim (fatigue) are the only two eligible not competing.
Arron Oberholser - PGA Golfer
(Wed, Nov 18 - 10:01pm ET)
According to a report in the San Jose Mercury News, Arron Oberholser is "healed" from the injuries that have sidelined him for the better part of two years. After his cameo T-33 at the Frys.com Open, Oberholser still has 14 starts on his Major Medical Extension to earn $349,854, terms well within reach if his body holds up. In preparation for 2010, he's continuing physical therapy three times a week and keeping his practice time to a minimum, but expect that to increase as the new season approaches. "I'm a fighter, not a quitter," Oberholser said. "When I want to have one, I can have a very nasty disposition, and that serves me well." As you know, AO can be a fantasy stud. Go ahead and bump him up your draft lists. Source: San Jose Mercury News
Adam Scott - PGA Golfer
(Wed, Nov 18 - 6:21pm ET)
It was announced today that the European Tour will table the idea of offering incentives to members to compete in select events. Fourteen months ago, the Euro Tour increased its membership requirement from 11 to 12 starts. That will remain the minimum for the 2010 season, which begins in South Africa in three weeks. The Tour also opened up the conduit of Affiliate Membership for 2009, making it easy for non-Euro members to contend in the Race to Dubai, the final of which begins on Thursday. Adam Scott, for one, admitted that he might forego Euro Tour membership next year if the membership incentives were approved. He is likely reconsidering his decision. Source: Reuters-UK
