Player: Juan Abreu (S) - Kansas City Royals
Transaction: Abreu, 24, recently became a minor league free agent. Armed with an impressive heater, Abreu posted a 1.69 ERA and 28/14 K/BB ratio in 20 relief appearances with Class A Wilmington, but struggled to a 5.75 ERA in 16 games upon a promotion to Double-A Northwest Arkansas.
Status: Minors
11/21/2009
Player: Vance Wilson (C) - Kansas City Royals
Transaction: Wilson missed the beginning of spring training with a right elbow injury. The 36-year old batted .270/.342/.461 in 229 at-bats for Double-A Northwest Arkansas. He'll compete for a major league spot in spring training.
Status: Minors
11/21/2009
Player: Shelley Duncan (OF) - New York Yankees
Transaction: This being Duncan's second time with an outright assignment gives him the ability to become a free agent, which he will do so. The son of Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan, Shelley just never could break into the Yankees bench despite flashing solid power. He'll hook on elsewhere and hope to be the next Garrett Jones.
Status: Active
11/20/2009
Player: Ezequiel Carrera (OF) - Seattle Mariners
Transaction: The players are now safe from being selected during December's Rule 5 draft. Carrera, who was acquired from the Mets in the J.J. Putz trade last December, batted .337/.441/.416 with two homers, 38 RBI, 27 stolen bases and 68 runs scored in 91 games for Double-A West Tennessee in 2009. Varvaro, 25, will be the starting pitcher for Peoria in Saturday's Arizona Fall league title game.
Status: Active
11/20/2009
Player: Austin Jackson (OF) - New York Yankees
Transaction: The seven are now protected from December's Rule 5 draft. Jackson, 22, batted .300/.354/.405 with four home runs, nine triples, 23 doubles, 65 RBI and 24 stolen bases in 132 games for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2009, and is often mentioned as New York's center fielder of the future.
Status: Active
11/20/2009
Player: Tug Hulett (2B) - Kansas City Royals
Transaction: The Royals cut Hulett to make room on the 40-man roster. The 26-year-old infielder spent most of the season at Triple-A Omaha, but batted .111/.158/.111 with one RBI in 18 at-bats with the big club. Hulett hasn't done much at the major league level, but he has shown good on-base skills while playing all over the diamond in the minors.
Status: Waived
11/20/2009
Player: Danny Valencia (3B) - Minnesota Twins
Transaction: The players are now on Minnesota's 40-man roster and are safe from selection in the Rule 5 Draft. Valencia, 25, could compete for the Twins' third base job this spring if they don't find a solution on the open market. He hit .286 in '09 with seven homers and 41 RBI in 71 games at Triple-A Rochester.
Status: Minors
11/20/2009
Player: Chris Waters (R) - Baltimore Orioles
Transaction: Waters appeared in five games (one start) this season on the major league level, posting a 5.40 ERA and 5/5 K/BB ratio in 11 2/3 innings. He had a 4.49 ERA in 29 appearances (20 starts) at Triple-A.
Status: Waived
11/20/2009
Player: Robert Manuel (R) - Boston Red Sox
Transaction: Maneul, 26, posted a 2.88 ERA and 49/16 K/BB ratio in 65 2/3 innings this season at the Triple-A level. His numbers are strong, but he has sub-par stuff and may be destined for a career in middle relief.
Status: Minors
11/20/2009
Player: Jeff Bianchi (2B) - Kansas City Royals
Transaction: The roster moves protect the players from being selected in the Rule 5 Draft. Bianchi hasn't exactly built on his impressive professional debut in 2006, but he managed a respectable .308/.358/.435 batting line this season between two different minor league levels and is only 23 years of age.
Status: Minors
11/20/2009
Player: Scott Sizemore (2B) - Detroit Tigers
Transaction: The four players are now on Detroit's 40-man roster and subsequently protected from the Rule 5 Draft. Sizemore, 24, underwent surgery in October to repair his left ankle but should be fine for the start of spring training. He'll get a shot to compete for the 2010 starting second base gig as long as the Tigers don't do something unexpected this winter on the free agent market.
Status: Minors
11/20/2009
Player: Sergio Santos (SS) - Chicago White Sox
Transaction: The transaction protects all five players from the Rule 5 Draft. Santos, 26, was converted into a pitcher prior to the 2009 season and went 0-3 with a 8.16 ERA in his first year on a professional mound.
Status: Minors
11/20/2009
Player: Jordan Brown (1B) - Cleveland Indians
Transaction: All seven players are now on the 40-man roster and thus protected from the Rule 5 Draft. Brown, 25, hit .336/.381/.532 this season with 15 homers and 67 RBI in 417 at-bats at Triple-A Columbus.
Status: Minors
11/19/2009
Player: Reidier Gonzalez (S) - Toronto Blue Jays
Transaction: Gonzalez is now protected from being chosen in December's Rule 5 draft. The 24-year-old right-hander was 4-6 with a 2.90 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 17 starts with Double-A New Hampshire in 2009, but has never been considered a top prospect. He'll likely start next season with Triple-A Las Vegas.
Status: Active
11/19/2009
Player: Desmond Jennings (OF) - Tampa Bay Rays
Transaction: The Rays also reinstated 1B Carlos Pena from the 60-day disabled list to complete their 40-man roster in preparation for December's Rule 5 draft. Jennings, 23, and Hellickson, 22, are two of the organization's most highly-regarded prospects, while Torres, a 21-year-old left-hander, was acquired from the Angels in the Scott Kazmir trade.
Status: Active
11/19/2009
Player: Zach Phillips (S) - Texas Rangers
Transaction: The pair are now protected from the Rule 5 draft. Phillips, 23, was 2-3 with 4 saves and a 1.39 ERA in 36 games (three starts) between Class A Bakersfield and Double-A Frisco in 2009. Kirkman, 23, went 9-8 with a 3.48 ERA in 26 games (25 starts) between Class A Bakersfield and Double-A Frisco.
Status: Active
11/19/2009
Player: Brad Thompson (R) - Kansas City Royals
Transaction: As a minor league free agent, Thompson was able to agree to a contract before Friday. The contract doesn't include a spot on Kansas City's 40-man roster, but he stands a pretty good chance of making the roster out of spring training, whether out of the bullpen or as a fifth starter. Thompson, 28, had a 4.36 ERA in parts of five seasons with the St. Louis, including a 4.84 ERA in 32 appearances (eight starts) in 2009.
Status: Minors
11/18/2009
Player: Josh Bell (3B) - Baltimore Orioles
Transaction: Barring any unforeseen tinkering, Baltimore's 40-man roster is likely set for December's Rule 5 Draft. Bell, 22, was acquired from the Dodgers in the George Sherrill trade and is considered the Orioles' third baseman of the future. Erbe, 21, enjoyed his best professional season in 2009, going 5-4 with a 2.70 ERA and 1.09 WHIP between Class A Aberdeen and Double-A Bowie. Snyder, 23, is another promising young hitter, batting .289/.362/.460 with 12 homers and 88 RBI between Double-A Bowie and Triple-A Norfolk. Florimon, 22, made some real strides in 2009, batting .259/.327/.412 with nine homers, 69 RBI, 26 stolen bases and 76 runs scored. He'll likely start 2010 at Double-A Bowie. Hughes, 26, was acquired from the Rays in the Gregg Zaun trade. He slugged 25 homers in 512 at-bats last season. Lebron, a 24-year-old, put up eye-popping numbers in 2009, posting a 2.54 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and an astounding 13.6 K/9. He could see the majors at some point next season.
Status: Active
11/18/2009
Player: Fernando Cabrera (R) - Boston Red Sox
Transaction: The 28-year-old righty posted a 1.71 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 52 2/3 innings this season as Triple-A Pawtucket's closer. He has a 5.12 career ERA on the major league level, but is likely to draw some interest on the open market.
Status: Free Agent
11/17/2009
Player: Sergio Mitre (S) - New York Yankees
Transaction: Despite declining the option, Mitre is arbitration-eligible and under team control. His arbitration-salary will likely fall under the $1.25 million he would have made with the option. In 2009, his first season back from Tommy John surgery, Mitre was 3-3 with a 6.79 ERA and 1.63 WHIP in 12 appearances (nine starts). The 28-year-old right-hander will likely serve as rotation-depth next season, however he could also be used as trade bait.
