Royal and Robert Meachem were signed to multi-year contracts last spring, and both were colossal busts in 2012. Royal was always battling a hamstring injury, and he finished the season with just 23 grabs for 234 yards and a touchdown in ten games played. The Chargers have depth at receiver, and the team could use some money to go get a free agent left tackle like Max Starks.

Talks 'moving slowly' between Cruz, Giants
Victor Cruz | NYG
(May 18, 2013 3:42 PM EDT)
Profootballtalk reports that contract extension talks between the Giants and restricted free agent Victor Cruz are "moving slowly."
Talks are expected to resume this week, a source tells PFT's Mike Florio. Cruz has yet to sign his one-year, $2.879 million tender, and he has reportedly lowered his contract demands "much closer" to $8 million annually after previously seeking $10-11 million per year. Cruz hasn't shown up for OTAs.

Cowboys' goal is to make Frederick the center
Travis Frederick | DAL
(May 18, 2013 3:34 PM EDT)
The Cowboys' goal is to make No. 31 overall pick Travis Frederick the starting center as a rookie.
Frederick will "compete" with Phil Costa and Ryan Cook for the gig, but owner/GM Jerry Jones has already stated that the rookie will immediately be a starter. Aside from LT Tyron Smith, the Cowboys' offense line was a disaster last season. Both guard spots and right tackle are up for grabs in training camp.

Teammate thinks Mike Goodson will be released
Mike Goodson | NYJ
(May 18, 2013 3:05 PM EDT)
Jets LG Willie Colon believes the team will release Mike Goodson following his arrest on Friday morning.
"It's one of the things where it's zero-tolerance with stuff like that," Colon said. "It's sad. Mike could have been huge for us. He wasn't around a lot, so I didn't really get to see him a lot. For the most part, I was kind of anticipating seeing how he was going to do in OTAs. A lot of guys were upset. They knew the type of ballplayer (he was)." The Jets guaranteed Goodson nearly $2 million two months ago, so we're not quite sure this is the end. But it wouldn't be a surprise if it was. Goodson faces jail time and almost certainly a suspension.

Polumbus considered favorite to start at RT
Tyler Polumbus | WAS
(May 18, 2013 1:43 PM EDT)
CSN Washington believes Tyler Polumbus has the "inside track" to the Redskins' starting right tackle job.
Polumbus started 15 games at right tackle for Washington last season, but he was completely over-matched as both a run and pass blocker. The Redskins re-signed Polumbus to a two-year deal, but they also brought in veterans Jeremy Trueblood and Tony Pashos as competition. The team is also reportedly very high on 2012 sixth-round pick Tom Compton, but he might be another year away.

Jaguars DT D'Anthony Smith on the bubble?
D'Anthony Smith | JAC
(May 18, 2013 1:28 PM EDT)
Jaguars DT D'Anthony Smith is on the roster bubble.
Deservedly so. Smith, the former third-round reach by since-fired GM Gene Smith, has missed all but eight games in his three-year career, and he's amassed just ten tackles. The Jaguars added Roy Miller, Sen'Derrick Marks, Kyle Love, and Brandon Deaderick to their defensive tackle rotation this offseason.

Eagles working Jason Avant at defensive back
Jason Avant | PHI
(May 18, 2013 12:30 PM EDT)
The Eagles have been working WR Jason Avant at defensive back.
Coach Chip Kelly is certainly putting his stamp on the team. We already mentioned how TE Clay Harbor was dabbling at outside linebacker. Avant set a career-high with 53 catches last season, but he's nothing more than a middling slot talent with no big-play ability. The Eagles traded for Arrelious Benn, and Avant might be on the outside looking in at the 53-man roster.

Ryan Broyles a breakout candidate for Lions
Ryan Broyles | DET
(May 18, 2013 12:20 PM EDT)
MLive.com considers Ryan Broyles a breakout candidate this season.
Broyles is recovering from a torn right ACL, and the Lions' only notable offseason receiver addition was sixth-round pick Corey Fuller. They must feel comfortable with Broyles' progress. In a six-game stretch last season, Broyles caught 21 passes for 307 yards and two touchdowns. Broyles is questionable for Week 1, but once he's back he'll have a ton of potential in the Lions' high-powered attack while working opposite Megatron.

Bolts strike 2-year deal with Dwight Freeney
Dwight Freeney | SD
(May 18, 2013 11:27 AM EDT)
Chargers agreed to terms with DE/OLB Dwight Freeney, formerly of the Colts, on a two-year contract.
33-year-old Freeney recorded 12 tackles and five sacks in the Colts' 3-4 defense last season, but it wasn't a particularly strong fit for his skill set. He was expected to eye a return back to the 4-3, but money talks and the Chargers had a huge need for a pass rusher after losing Melvin Ingram to a torn ACL. Freeney should see significant snaps opposite Jarret Johnson, and the Chargers have already stated that they could tinker their defense to better suit the veteran. Freeney will not lack scheme familiarity. He played in Chuck Pagano's defense in 2012, and Chuck's brother John is the Chargers' defensive coordinator.

Jets interested in adding another QB to mix?
Trent Edwards | FA
(May 18, 2013 11:13 AM EDT)
ESPN New York reports the Jets haven't "slammed the door shut" on adding another quarterback to replace David Garrard.
The free-agent market is barren, but one name that sticks out is Trent Edwards. Edwards was with new Jets OC Marty Mornhinweg in Philadelphia last season. Including the preseason, the 29-year-old completed over 68 percent of his passes and threw for four touchdowns. Edwards wouldn't be an option to start, but he knows the offense and could hold the clipboard for Geno Smith if the Jets are intent on dumping Mark Sanchez.
