Danny Duffy to begin rehab assignment Sunday
Danny Duffy | KC
(May 24, 2013 11:43 AM EDT)
Danny Duffy (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Northwest Arkansas on Sunday.
He'll throw 60 pitches for the Naturals. Making his way back from Tommy John surgery, Duffy will surely require the full 30 days on his rehab assignment. Assuming the results are there and his arm strength is back, he should be added to the Royals' rotation in late June. The left-hander is worth stashing on the DL if you have the roster space.

Ryan Mattheus | WAS
(May 24, 2013 11:22 AM EDT)
Ryan Mattheus is expected to be sidelined 4-6 weeks with a fractured right hand.
Mattheus won't require surgery, but since the injury is to his pitching hand he can't do a whole lot while out. He'll have to build his arm strength back up once out of his cast.

Sean Nolin called up for Friday start
Sean Nolin | TOR
(May 24, 2013 11:01 AM EDT)
Blue Jays purchased the contract of LHP Sean Nolin from Double-A New Hampshire.
Nolin will make his major league debut on Friday against the Orioles. A sixth-round pick in 2010, he has posted a 1.17 ERA and 16/5 K/BB ratio in 15 1/3 innings this season at the Double-A level. The southpaw is worth a look in deeper AL-only formats.
Darren Oliver placed on disabled list
Darren Oliver | TOR
(May 24, 2013 10:59 AM EDT)
Blue Jays placed LHP Darren Oliver on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 19. with a left shoulder strain.
Oliver has been dealing with the ailment for 7-10 and hadn't appeared in a game in nearly a week. He shouldn't be out long, but the Jays have decided to play things safe. Toronto still has two lefties in the bullpen in Aaron Loup and Brett Cecil.

Nick Tepesch | TEX
(May 24, 2013 9:49 AM EDT)

Tepesch had to be scratched from his last start due to a blister on his right middle finger, but he's fine now. The right-hander holds a 3.98 ERA and 1.33 WHIP over eight starts this season and isn't a bad streaming option for Sunday.

Jake Westbrook not seriously hurt
Jake Westbrook | STL
(May 24, 2013 9:38 AM EDT)
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Rick Hummel writes that Jake Westbrook (elbow) "does not seem to be seriously hurt but his rehabilitation program may be dialed back a little."
Westbrook tried throwing from a mound Wednesday for the first time since landing on the DL but had to stop after 20 pitches due to lingering pain in his right elbow. The Cardinals don't believe he has structural damage in the elbow, but clearly he's not ready to return anytime soon. It's not clear what the next step for the right-hander is.

Chad Gaudin could move into rotation
Chad Gaudin | SF
(May 24, 2013 9:27 AM EDT)
Chad Gaudin could get a shot in the Giants' rotation following the injury to Ryan Vogelsong (hand).
Gaudin has been great in long relief for San Francisco this season, posting a 2.08 ERA and 1.19 WHIP while striking out nearly a batter per inning. He's thrown more than two innings just once this month, though, so he's obviously not as stretched out as you'd hope. Manager Bruce Bochy and GM Brian Sabean have also noted that Gaudin is very valuable in his current role. Other options to replace Vogelsong include Shane Loux and Mike Kickham.

Indians considering Carlos Carrasco promotion
Carlos Carrasco | CLE
(May 24, 2013 9:01 AM EDT)
The Indians are contemplating when to promote Carlos Carrasco.
Carrasco deserves another shot in the rotation, having posted a 1.36 ERA while striking out 41 over 39 2/3 Triple-A innings. The problem is that he has to serve a suspension, which will last eight games unless it's reduced following his appeal. "Once we have a sense of what the final suspension will be, maybe it's eight games, maybe it's less, we'll have an idea how to work around it," said general manager Chris Antonetti. It would be easiest to work around the suspension at the All-Star break, but it's possible the Tribe will call Carrasco up before then.
