Storm Woods battling for No. 1 running back
Storm Woods | ORS
(April 25, 2012 10:59 AM EDT)
Storm Woods is in tight competition with Malcolm Agnew for the starting running back spot.
Woods is a redshirt freshman who has been very impressive this spring is running neck-and-neck with Agnew and providing a nice situation for coach Mike Riley. Agnew, who will be a sophomore, ran for 223 yards in the Beavers’ opener last season. Injuries limited his playing time the rest of the way, however, as he ran for only 200 more yards. Riley should be able to look forward to 2-3 years of Woods and Agnew together.

Travis Wilson made an impression this spring
Travis Wilson | UT
(April 25, 2012 10:28 AM EDT)
Freshman Travis Wilson played well beyond his experience level this spring.
Wilson, an early enrollee, said adjusting to the speed of the college game has been his biggest challenge. But adjust he has and coach Kyle Whittingham can'y say enough about Wilson’s ability to make things happen. If Wilson continues to impress in August, Whittingham may turn to him should something happen to starter Jordan Wynn, who is coming off shoulder surgery.

Jerome Smith appears to be No. 1 running back
Jerome Smith | SYR
(April 24, 2012 1:24 PM EDT)
Jerome Smith appears to be in the lead as the starting running back for the Orange.
Smith’s versatility this spring was unmistakable. He excelled at running, catching passes out of the backfield and blocking. His work earned praise from coach Doug Marrone, who admired how the junior-to-be elevated his game. Smith had only 34 carries last season for 134 yards and one TD.

Don't expect Keith Price to duplicate 2012
Keith Price | WA
(April 24, 2012 11:56 AM EDT)
With major contributors on offense having moved on, it may be asking too much for Keith Price to duplicate his 2011 effort.
Price may prove to be a better quarterback during his junior season, but the numbers could pale to 2011. The loss of running back Chris Polk, let alone a couple of top receivers, can only alter the dynamics of the Huskies' offense. After all, Polk chewed up the yards big time while wearing down opposing defenses. There are also issues on the line that, at least early in the season, could hinder the overall development of an offense with many new faces in stating roles.

Alcohol leads to Ralph Bolden's arrest
Ralph Bolden | PUR
(April 24, 2012 11:43 AM EDT)
Running back Ralph Bolden arrested on suspicion of public intoxication.
This puts a damper what was a nice spring for Bolden, who was working his way back into shape after missing the last few games of the 2011 season with a torn right ACL. Coach Danny Hope and the university are handling the matter. An issue like this -- more of needing to grow up than anything -- often results in a suspension for a game or two.

Montee Ball will be held out of spring game
Montee Ball | WS
(April 24, 2012 11:35 AM EDT)
Running back Montee Ball will not play in the Badgers’ spring game Saturday.
No need to risk injury to the team’s biggest star. After all, there is nothing to gain by having last season’s Heisman Trophy and Doak Walker Award (best running back) finalist dress for the end-of-spring affair. It makes you wonder why more coaches do not go this route with their most impactful players.

Kevin Prince battling to be starting QB
Kevin Prince | UCL
(April 23, 2012 9:49 PM EDT)
Kevin Prince finished 2011 as the Bruins’ starting QB, but the picture has not been as clear this spring.
Ideally, coach Jim Mora, Jr. will have a No. 1 quarterback when UCLA’s spring practice sessions conclude. However, it is not imperative. Prince is in competition with Richard Brehaut and Brett Hundley. He certainly has had his moments this spring, but there is not enough separation from the other two. Last season,Prince threw for 1,828 yards and 12 touchdowns (8 picks) and added 424 yards with a TD on the ground.

Tyler Russell the clear-cut starting QB
Tyler Russell | MSS
(April 23, 2012 9:30 PM EDT)
Tyler Russell leaves no question that he is the starting quarterback.
Russell had a nice spring after a disappointing conclusion to the 2011 season. A knee sprain kept him out of the last two games, including the Music City Bowl. Russell took over the starting chores for Chris Reif in MSU’s fifth game. With Reif’s eligibility expired, it is Russell's job to lose.
